Using Different Fabrication Methods to
Develop Outdoor Seating

ideation

We began by sketching different ideas for stool or chair designs. We drew a lot of inspiration from outdoor furniture and planned to make a seating element suitable for the outdoors.

Plywood

The plywood stool is a flat pack design that can be disassembled for storage or shipping

Hardwood

The hardwood stool is designed to be a permanent fixture and uses high quality materials for a hand-crafted feel.

process

To build the stools, we sewed together cushions, cut on the CNC, and cut and glued the hardwood pieces together

Hardwood

For the hardwood stool, we set up multiple jigs to ensure that each piece was cut to the exact same length. Then, we assembled, glued, and clamped the pieces together to form the final stool.

Cushion Sewing

Our group wanted to put a heavy emphasis on comfort when designing our stool, so we decided to create an upholstered seat that could be wrapped around the stool and tightened using leather straps.

CNC Cuts

The files for the CNC were first modeled in Solidworks, where we figured out the form of the design. Then, the files were taken into a CAM software where the toolpaths were created so that the shape could be cut out.
